WHAT DO I EXPECT AT AN APPOINTMENT?
At our first appointment, we will go over lifestyle and diet history. What do you currently eat like, what are your like and dislikes, what is your overall medical history, and how is your current digestion. Then we talk about some overall goals and define some concrete steps to reach them. At each follow up appointment, we go over what has been going well and what obstacles you might be facing. We can also go over labwork ordered by your physician, weight trends, and options for physical activity.
WILL DIET CURE MY ILLNESS?
In most cases, no. However, what diet and lifestyle changes can do is put you in “symptom remission” which is a fancy way of saying: your illness will impact your daily life less. In many cases, the number of medications and dosage of medications can be decreased through lifestyle changes.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF DIETARY COUNSELING?
The field of dietetics focuses on how the food we eat influences the way our body works and our health. In many ways this means a focus on prevention and improving quality of life. In many ways, it also means addressing gastrointestinal symptoms you may be having or symptoms from other illnesses and trying to improve them through food and activity changes.
DOES DIETARY COUNSELING MEAN I CANNOT EAT MY FAVORITE FOODS?
NO! In more than 90% of cases, NO FOOD IS BANNED. A large part of life is about enjoyment. We have no desire to relieve your symptoms while taking away something you enjoy.
WHO DO YOU WORK WITH?
Anyone! I counsel anyone from birth through pregnancy and on to their golden years. I have experience seeing clients with goals ranging from weight loss, to better athletic performance, to chronic illness, to acute illness, diabetes, renal disease, thyroid issues, and everyone in between. I also love working with individuals and families who wish to maintain their health and those who wish to prevent lifestyle and chronic illness that tends to run in their family.
